The Guard House Museum

Established in 2004, the museum has served the community as a history headquarters. Visitors can explore the historic Summerville Campus, where Augusta's U.S. Arsenal operated for more than 125 years. Visitors will learn the story of Augusta University, and its many legacy institutions, including the Medical College of Georgia and Richmond Academy.

The history of the surrounding Sand Hills and Summerville historic districts is told through a timeline exhibition spanning more than 200 years of higher education and development in the city of Augusta.

The museum reopened on October 20, 2022, and will serves as a welcome center for visitors wishing to explore the history walk that circles the Summerville Campus. Please plan to visit the museum during our opening hours and special events to learn more about Augusta University's rich history.

The museum operating hours will be from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. Guided tours are available upon appointment. Book a guided tour HERE!

The Challenge

The challenge for this project was creating the brand while also spreading awareness about the Museum. I did not have a previous look or guide to go off of since no branding had ever been established. This project would lay the foundation for the museum's brand and people's impression of the museum.

Solution

Drawing inspiration from both the historical Summerville community and the rich history of the university, I created a distinctive brand that is now known wide. I kept with the university colors, our brand naturally embodies the spirit of the institution, while our choice of an oak tree logo pays homage to the historic landmark that graces the grounds—the venerable Arsenal Oak Tree outside the museum, steeped in profound significance. The interior of the Museum also mirrors this.

Results

The Guard House Museum opening was successful and has had 2 exhibitions within the space. Curious was reignited within the community and engagement increased so much that students give daily guided tours.
